Transfer Duty Explained
Transfer duty is a tax payable to SARS on most property transfers. Rates are progressive based on purchase price and apply to individuals, companies and trusts. From 1 April 2025, purchases up to R1.21 million attract 0% duty; brackets apply above that threshold.
Midlands practical notes
- Your conveyancer calculates and pays duty before lodgement
- Incorrect purchase price splits or related-party deals can trigger SARS queries
- VAT-registered developer sales may use VAT instead of transfer duty — confirm with your attorney
